The cultural preservation activity on traditional songs collection was organized in COERR’s Social Service Center in Zone C of Ban Mae La Shelter on September 12, 2019. There were 40 participants of 22 female and 18 male.
This activity aims at having elderly understand and appreciate their own traditional songs which need to be preserved as treasure of their community and it is the elderly’s awareness that the only way to preserve their treasure is to share and transfer them to the younger generations in the community.
On September 17, COERR organized the Herbal Steaming Basket Weaving training at the Social Service Center Mae La Zone A for 40 interested displaced persons of 25 female and 15 male.
This activity enables elderly to learn how to make use of bamboo to form into containers especially a big basket and how to weave a big basket which is a basic container for a special use in herbal treatment medication.
Bamboo basket weaving is traditional learning which needs to be preserved by elderly to the younger generation in the community.
In addition, bamboo weaving containers, such as baskets, also generate income for family livelihood.
On September 24, a training in “Traditional Wisdom Based Herbal Treatment” was organized to have 40 interested participants of 31 female and 9 male learn about benefit of herbs and how to do herbal treatment for healthcare and medication of themselves, their family members and for future livelihood income generation activity.
In Umpiem, Poppra Distict, Tak Province, COERR organized the Cultural Activities for Elderly to meet and share their traditional songs’ collection together with the making of door mat rugs for household use.
The first event was organized in Zone A on September 13, 2019 in which 30 persons attended and the second event was organized in Zone B on September 27, in which 25 persons attended.
Cultural Activities at Umpiem Zone A on September 13th, had 30 participants:22 female and 8 male.
The event in Zone B of Umpiem on September 27th, has 25 participants of 13 female and 12 male.
At Ban Nupo, COERR organized the bamboo basketry activities on September 12, in which 30 vulnerable persons joining the handmade bamboo splitting into strips as a preparation for basket making.
After learning about how to split bamboo into strips, Karens were also taught how to weave these bamboo strips to be shapes like containers such as baskets in several designs based on household uses. This handicrafts is preserved for cultural conservation as well as for environment preservation as bamboo is natural resource. There were 30 interested participants attending on September 13, 2019, including 18 female and 12 male.
